PA6 with acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) materials were investigated over a range of compositions using styrene/maleic anhydride (SMA) copolymer as the compatibilizing agent. The effects of blending sequence and blend composition on the morphological, mechanical properties of these blends were explored at a fixed (5phr) compatibilizer content. The relationship between morphology of PA6/ABS/SMA blends and mechanical properties were also discussed. The poor compatibility of the blends prepared by pure PA6 and ABS has been found. The boundary between the phase domains of PA6 and ABS appears sharp and clear, and the dispersed phase tends to congregate. In case of adding SMA, the compatibility of PA6 and ABS is improved remarkably. It is noted that a improved interfacial adhesion, reduction in the particle size of dispersed phase and more uniform could be achieved in the blends containing SMA .In the existence of compatibilizer the interaction between ABS and PA6 would change with different procedure for adding the compatibilizer.Compared to binary blends of PA6 and ABS, when ABS was blends with the preblends PA6/SMA blend, addition of SMA causes the phase inversion composition to shift to a higher PA6 volume fraction; whereas, when PA6 was blends with the preblends ABS/SMA blend or PA6, ABS and SMA were blended simultaneoudly, the co-continuous structures were observed over a much narrower composition range. For blends of PA 6 dispersed in a ABS matrix, the effects of blending sequence on particle size change greatly; but for blends of ABS dispersed in a PA 6 matrix, the effects of blending sequence on particle size are quite small. When blends of PA 6 dispersed in a ABS matrix, the effects of blending sequence on mechanical properties change greatly, the mechanical propeties of the (ABS/SMA) /PA6 blends is the best , following it is the (PA6/SMA) /ABS blends, and the ABS/PA6/SMA blends is the worst; for blends of ABS dispersed in a PA 6 matrix, the effects of blending sequence on mechanical properties are quite small.
