Preparation of modified acrylic emulsion with modified monomers, crosslinking agents and reactive surfactants, and their performance on fiberglass mesh and surface protective film were investigated in this study. The monomers such as styrene, epoxy resin (WSR6101), methacryloxypropyltrimethoxy- silane (KH-570), diallyl phthalate (DAP) and the reactive surfactant (DNS-86 and ANPEO10) were used to modify acrylic emulsion by pre-emulsified and seed emulsion polymerization technology, and the effects of acrylic emulsion on the degree of crosslinking (DCL) of resin strength retention rate(SRR) of fiberglass mesh were discussed. It was indicated that the SRR of fiberglass mesh was raised when St was at 24% and DAP was at 1% (based on the total weight of monomers), but SRR was not improved when the amount of KH-570 was below 2% (based on the total weight of monomers). The epoxy resin limited the degree of crosslinking supplied by DAP, so the epoxy resin and DAP can not be used together. When the initial DCL of emulsion was lower (containing no DAP), the SRR of fiberglass mesh was improved by using 5% epoxy resin. Furthermore, SRR of fiberglass mesh was improved when the dosage of reactive surfactant was below 25% (based on the total weight of surfactants), but SRR of fiberglass mesh showed a declining trend when its dosage was more than 25%. The results indicated that SRR of the prepared emulsion was improved by 2~6% than the emulsion in the market. To discuss the reason of the decline of SRR of fiberglass mesh, the relation between weight loss rate of fiberglass mesh and the dipping time in alkaline solution was studied, and the surface changes of acrylic resin film and fiberglass were evaluated with FT-IR and Microscope. It was indicated that resin film had a slight hydrolysis in 5% NaOH aqueous solution at 80℃, and the lye permeated resin film and directly corroded fiberglass. Therefore the resin can not protect fiberglass resulting in the declination of SRR of fiberglass mesh.Surface protective film was also prepared by coating the acrylic emulsion on the PE film, and its heat-resistance on mirror plate was studied. The results showed that DCL of emulsion was improved by using crosslinking agents, and there was no residue and shadow on mirror aluminum plate. Furthermore, the reactive surfactants and the redox initiator were used in the emulsion. However results showed that there was shadow on mirror stainless steel plate.
