ACS resin formed from acrylonitrile (AN), styrene (St) and chlorinatedpolyethylene (CPE) and MCS resin formed from methyl methacrylate(MMA), styrene (St) and chlorinated polyethylene (CPE), which possessfire resistance and weather fastness, are the replacement products of ABSresin. ABS resin is one of the best and widely used constructionengineering plastic. But there are unsaturated bonds in the ABS molecular,so its weather fastness is poor and unfit to be used out of the door. Still theresin does not possess fire resistance. ACS resin and MCS resin overcomethe above deficiencies. N-phenylmaleimide (N-PMI) has become aninteresting monomer as a new modifier of resins in recent years, which canimprove heat-resistant, has better compatibility, non-toxic, and has betterthermal stability. It can be easily copolymerized with other vinyl monomersto improve the thermal stability of the copolymers. In this paper, the heat-resistant ACS (MCS) copolymers, aresynthesized by the method of suspension swelling graft copolymerizationusing N-PMI as modifier. Graft-type ACS/MCS were extracted, and thendetermined the composition and graft efficiency. The copolymercomposition is analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. Theweight-average and number-average molecular weights of copolymers aredetermined by gel permeation chromatography. The thermal properties ofcopolymers are investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, torsionalbraid analysis and thermogravimetric analysis. And the rheologicalbehaviors of copolymers are investigated by flow tester. The results show that when using N-PMI as the modifier of ACS resin, the monomers grafted onto CPE successively and the graft efficiencyincrease with increasing N-PMI feed content or AN content. Tg anddegradation temperature of the copolymers increased with increasingN-PMI feed content in the copolymer, but they almost had no change withincreasing AN feed content. And when using N-PMI as the modifier of MCS resin, the monomersgrafted onto CPE successively and the graft efficiency increase withincreasing N-PMI feed content or MMA content. Tg and degradationtemperature of the copolymers increased with increasing N-PMI feedcontent in the copolymer, but they almost had no change with increasingMMA feed content. The apparent viscosity increased with the increasingcontent of N-PMI, but it decreased with the increasing content of MMA.
