The Study On The Application Of DIY Concept To Module Furniture Design

As the developing of the social economy, experience has become a new trend which has been recognized by people. In the Times of individuality, people can't satisfy with the commodities following the same pattern or passively adapt to the form, color and function of products which have already been formulated. People would like to participate in the design themselves and gain the experience from the product. This experience sense will become the highlight of the added value in the R&D, enterprises adopt strategy one after another to satisfy the experience need of consumers. Module furniture is the furniture design mode based on the mass customization, which use the Module as basic structure unit. Because of its high-effective, saving time and energy, the Module furniture has been spread greatly.This paper aims at the contradiction of individual need and the mass customization, applying the DIY concept to the combination of the Module furniture design. Through the case study of contemporary Module furniture the paper come out the combination regularity and the function extensive mode. According to the analysis, we find out that the combination mode of Module furniture include five kinds which are juxtaposition, intersection, overlap and fold. The combination of intersection can be divided into horizontal intersection, vertical intersection and crisscross; Overlap can be divided into opposite overlap and staggered overlap. Summarizing the combination mode of DIY design in the Module furniture on the general meaning, using the combination regularity to sum up the various possibilities of Module furniture, it will has guiding meanings to the design of Module furniture.Furthermore, this paper consider that in the DIY combination of Module furniture,the function of Module has been extended. We divide function into two parts which are original function and extensive function. Original function is the general function of unit Module, while extensive function is the outcome of the Module's combination. The extension of function mainly results from the changes of combination form and structure in the course of combination. The division of function can promote the value of combination's regularity, the analysis of combination's regularity can achieve furniture's function better.
