With the merit of low price ,easy product, and good adhesive strength, Poly(vinyl acetate) emulsion adhesive was used widely. The bad cold endurance, brittle membrane, and bad impact properties narrowed the range of its use. In order to expand the range of its use, butyl acrylate was used to polymerize with vinyl acetate, and the emulsion properties was also discussed in the article. In the article, the properties of the emulsion added some polymer with surface activity and dispersibility was studied, polyvinyl alcohol used as protective colliod. From TEM, the dispersibility of the emulsion was discussed. And also discussed the effect of its percentage on emulsion viscosity and peel strength when used as adhesive. The chose of emulsifier and the ratio of VAc and BA was also studied. The dispersibility of the emulsion was good, the viscosity of the emulsion was low, and the peel strength was well, when M was added. The peel strength was bad, when more M was added. The emulsion vicosity was higher, the peel strength was better, and the Tg of the polymer was lower, when the percentage of BA increased.Besides, the properties of the emulsion with M as protective colloid was studied. From TEM, contrast to the emulsion with polyvinyl alcohol as protective colloid, the dispersibility of the emulsion was better. Judging from the figures of FTIR and ~1HNMR, M was polymerized with the monomers. And also discussed the effect of the percentage of M and the ratio of BA and VAc on the emulsion viscosiy and peel strength. From DSC curves, the polymer Tg was affected little by the percentage of M, but lower when the percentage of M increased. In the article, the mechanics of M as protective colloid in the emulsion system was discussed as well. With some adsorbed onto the particle surface, and some polymerized with monomers, steric hindrance increased, and emulsion became more stable.
