Relations between chemical composition and physicochemical properties such as melting temperature, melting rate and viscosity of mold powder for large billet have been researched comprehensively. The curve of temperature, melting rate and viscosity of mold powder for large billet slag have been set up. Predict the melting temperature melting rate and viscosity of moldpowder. Using these curves, above mentioned properties of mold powder can be predicted in order to develop mold powder for large billet.According to the main parameters of mold for large billet in an steelmaking production, melting temperature, melting rate and viscosity can be calculated. A reasonable chemical composition of mold powder can be determined by orthogonal experimental design. It has been optimized base on experiments in laboratory. Finally, a desired composition of mold powder is developed which can meet the requirement of large billet in order to improve the surface quality of billet and decrease the accident. Commercial test also is carried on so as to test the properties of the mold powder.
