Polycarbonate (PC) is a new kind of thermoplastic engineering plastic and used widely in the area of information storage, automobile, optic implement and aeronautic equipment. However, it is important to modified the surface of PC and improve its hydrophilicity before its utilization.Ion beam with various gas mixture ration generated in gridless ion beam source with low energy was employed for surface modification of polycarbonate (PC). The microcosmic working mechanism between PC and low energy ion beam was discussed and the general performance of the PC was researched after treated.Surface composes as well as surface roughness were analyzed by X-photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. The results showed that in large variety of reactive groups were created at the surface of treated PC and the oxygen content at the surface of PC increased rapidly. Surface roughness was decreased at the beginning of treating and then increased due to ion beam etching effect. The hydrophilicity of PC was significantly improved after modification. However, the good hydrophilicity would be decreased obviously with time going because of the aging effect of low energy ion beam modification. The rigidity, chemical stability and adhesive property of modified PC were improved compared with its origin. The optical transmission of the PC was decreased slightly after modification, but the haze was not influenced obviously.
