Based on the experimental observations that the contact angle always keep constant, the three-phase interaction energy near the contact line is introduced to obtain a new relation in describing the apparent contact angle. Several new relations are presented to treat the wetting problem and main conclusions include:First, a more general model is given based on which some phenomena such as hydrophilic/hydrophobic transition and limit contact angle are explained at the level of new mechanism, and the shortcomings of Wenzel model and Cassie model are overcome.Second, new contact angle relations are obtained in the sense of combining the properties of smooth surface, rough surface and contact angle hysteresis. The results of the numerical simulations show that the introduction of the three-phase interaction helps to explain the wetting mechanism more efficiently than the models like Wenzel relation did.Third, for the contact hysteresis problem the trend of the advancing angle and the receding angle with several factors such as roughness geometrics and surface tensions is given and the results exhibit that the surface roughness and the three-phase interaction energy significantly affect the solid-liquid interfacial strength.
