The main components of landfill gas are methane, carbon dioxide, sulfated hydrogen and ammonia. Compared with carbon dioxide, methane has more greenhouse potential. As the fast growth of China's MSW, the threat of LFG to environment has becoming an urgent problem to be solved. Meanwhile, with high heat value and high methane concentration, LFG is a kind of high-value clean fuel. If LFG generated in large amount in landfill, it could be recycled for further utilization, to reach the purpose of greenhouse gas reduction and ease the pressure from social needs for energy. In this way, in order to minimizing its impacts on environment with relatively low cost, LFG should be treated properly according to the specific situation of the landfill with different ways and be fully utilized. This paper research mainly on LFG prediction model, onsite gas generation rate testing, selection system for treatment ways, it would be guide the decision making procedure to select the right treatment way for the landfill. The paper firstly introduced the development of LFG utilization technology and research work, then points out three treatment ways suits China's landfills, respectively, they are direct discharge, flaring after collection and electricity generation. IPCC landfill gas prediction model was introduced to compare the onsite test results and yield satisfactory consistency; it could be used to calculate the current gas generation rate and volume variation in the future. After the research on the three treatment ways, AHP model was used to evaluate the suitability of these ways for different landfill sites from the aspects of technology, economy, environment and society.Three specific landfills were taken as project instances to test the practicability and feasibility of selection system when it was applied in landfills with different gas generation rates and conditions. The result shows that, electricity generation with methane generating rate above 500m3/h will an ideal treatment way both from environmental and economical sides.
