The production and processing of iron ores have a direct influence on the iron & steel industry. Therefore, the research of separation technology for complex iron ores has an important practical significance on improving comprehensive utilization of iron ore resources in China. This paper described the current situation, production, processing and application of flotation reagents of iron ore resources. It was pointed out that the research and development on new type of efficient reagents was more important. The iron ores of Lunan Mining Company was regarded as the research object in the paper. Through the comprehensive analysis on the raw ore, a new collector SR was studied. Through the single factor and orthogonal experiment, the optimum flotation condition was determined. Flotation mechanism of SR was studied by Infrared Absorptions Spectra analysis and Zeta-potential.In this article, ultraviolet radiation was selected as catalyzer, fatty acid and SOCl2 was selected as raw material, SR was synthesized in the sealed container with a circular cooling device. Through a series of condition tests, the optimum synthesis condition was determined, the reaction temperature was 70℃, mole ration of fatty acid and SOCl2 was 1 to 4. Through the Infrared Absorptions Spectra analysis, a-Chlorofattyacid was found in the synthetic product.Take the magnetic concentrate as raw ore for flotation. Through single factor and orthogonal experiments, the dosage of ragulator, depressant, activator, and collector were confirmed. NaOH dosage was 1000g/t, DF dosage was 1000g/t, CaO dosage was 200g/t and SR dosage was 800g/t. the optimum pulp concentration was 40%-45% and the optimum pulp temperature was 30℃. Baseing on these conditions, optimizing floatation experiments was carried on, the index of closed flotation was as below, concentrate yield was 75.02%, concentrate grade was 67.08%, recovery was 86.23%. This index was prior to that of reverse flotation in Lunan Mining Company.Through the measurement on pure mineral by the Zeta-potential, points of zero charge of quartz and pure iron ore were found. Zeta-potential of iron ore was compared before and after acting with SR, the change indicated that SR had a little influence on the iron Zeta-potential under the condition of neutral and alkalescence, and iron Zeta-potential was improved under the strongly acidic condition; the variations might be caused by a macromolecular chain of SR, SR also adsorbed the H+ after molecular adsorption on surface of iron ore, therefore, iron Zeta-potential was improved; Ca2+ played a primary role in compressing the the double electric layer of quartz, so that the PZC of quartz inclined to decrease. In the high concentration alkali solution, SR had a strong effect with Ca2+-containing quartz, which was suitable to reverse floatation. Through the Infrared Absorptions Spectra analysis, action mechanism of SR and quartz was studied. Without the activation of Ca2+, adsorption did not take place between SR and quartz, with the activation of Ca2+, chemisorption took place between them.
