Baicalin is a flavonoid compound purified from the medicinal plant Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi and has been reported to possess anti-inflammatory activity. After going over the literatures published in recent 10 years, we can learn that the efficacy of baicalin is versatile. The effects of eliminating oxygen free radicals, decreasing ischemia -reperfusion injury, regulating immunological function, and promoting cell apoptosis are all involved in its parmocological mechanism. With the development of biological technology and separating technique of chemical components of Chineses traditional drugs, it can be predicted that baicalin has p tential application values in the effects of anti-oxidation,anti-tumor, anti-HIV, and in the therapy of cardiovascular diseases as well. To establish a method for content determination of baicalin in Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi extract and to optimize the extraction technique. To prepare and evaluate the formulation of bilayer sustained release oral films of Baicalin. The sustained release films were produced by spreading drug on protective films. Their mucoadhesion and adhesive time in vitro, tensile test and dissolved time were investigated in order to determine an optimum formulation. CS,Alginate sodium and PVA in a ratio of 33%:43%:24% were an optimum formulation, and its bioadhesive force was 254g/cm~2,the adhesive time in vitro was240min, tensile test of 61.5N and dissolved time of 260 min was showed in vitro.IR spectra and SEM of films showed favourable configuration. High temperature, high humidity and acceleration test have been done to evaluate the drug content, degradation, deliquescent and adhesive released rate. The study represented the Baicalin bilayer sustained-release film has a excellent pharmic performance and it will be a new promising drug for curing oral disease .The minimum inhibitory concentration(MICs) of baicalin against Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus were determined by Test-tube dilution method. MIC of baicalin against Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans was 1.24mg/ml and 1.00g/ml.
