The removals of volatile organic compounds such as benzene, toluene, xylene, styrene, mathanal, mathanol, acetone and ethyl acetate by pulsed corona combined with absorption were investigated. In the experiment, the influences of operation parameters like electrode material, pulse voltage, gas resident time and initial concentration of VOCs were investigated. Experimental result showed that the removal of VOCs is higher by using tungsten electrode as the corona wire, compaired with using copper eletrode and Ni-Cr electrode. The removal of VOCs increases with the increase of the pulse voltage and gas resident time. On the other hand, the removal of VOCs decreases with the increase of initial concentration of VOCs, but, the absolute amount of VOCs removaled increases.Experimental result showed that decomposition of styrene, xylene and mathanal is easy compairing with other tested VOCs. When the VOCs concentrations were under 500mg/m~3, the removals can be achieved over 90% for styrene, xylene and mathanal, over 80% for toluene and mathanol, and 60-70% for acetone and ethyl acetate, respectively. It is found that the reactor combined with absorption was more beneficial for the decomposition of VOCs. When the NaOH solution is used as absorbent, the removal of ethyl acetate can increase 48 percentage, and 13 to 25 percentage increased for others. In order to evaluate the feasibility of this system to industrial application, an enlargement experiment was performed to remove painting waste gas (mainly xylene, ethylbenzene, toluene, butyl alcohol and ethyl acetate contained) from a static spray painting falicity of bicycle manufacturing plant. The removal of aromatic VOCs is about 40%, and the removal of oxygen containing VOCs is about 70%, when medium-to low concerntration VOCs exhausted by painting facility is treated by plused corona combined with absorption. It has lower operating cost for plused corona combined with absorption, comparing with thermal combustion or activated carbon adsorption.
