In the late spring of 2007, the water bloom of a large area of Lake Taihu and the subsequent deterioration of water quality and pollution of water source made eutrophication of lakes and reservoirs draw unprecedented attention from the government, academic fields and many other sectors of the society. The eutrophication and water bloom of lakes and reservoirs, affect adversely their ecological security, thereby endangering the safety of water source, jeopardizing the regional sustainable development. Therefore comprehensive and systematic assessment of the ecological security of lakes and reservoirs becomes an important issue to ensure the regional sustainable development. At present, study in lakes'ecological security assessment is limited at home and abroad, the assessment index system, assessment standards, assessment classification standards and assessment methods basically follow the approaches for regional or watershed ecological assessment. How to accurately, systematically and quantitatively assess lakes'ecological security, so far in the theory and methodology has not gained any convincing breakthroughs. This article, based on the investigation of the research progress of lakes'and reservoirs'ecological security and their assessment, guided by the basic theory of sustainable development and the basic principles of systematic science and ecology, centered on the ecosystems of lakes and reservoirs, based on the assessment of the pressure of human activities, the ecological health of lakes and reservoirs and their ecosystem services, proposes Human Stress Index (F1), Demand Services Index (F2) and Ecological Security Index (F3) and the General Contrast Weighting Method applicable for ecological security assessment of water environment, and constructs an index and method system of comprehensive assessment of ecological security through rigorous theoretical derivation and model construction. Subsequently, the rationality and reliability of this method system have been confirmed by the assessment of ecological security of Chaohu Lake in China. The result shows that the proposed index and method system complies with the basic principles of system sciences and ecology, and can scientifically assess the ecological security and its influence on regional sustainable development, and can also provide scientific, rational, user-friendly technical support for the assessment of ecological security and horizontal comparison study of lakes and reservoirs in China.
