Ecological security is posing challenge for human survival and development. In the world, the situation of ecological security is getting more and more severe, so that in some regions the ecological destruction has begun to impede heavily the sustainable development of social economy, there exist many conflicts that may trigger ecological crises, ecological security is critical in promoting the comprehensive competitiveness of a region. Therefore, the ecological security assessment(ESA) has been consequently getting increased attention from the researchers. On the basis of extensive absorption of related research fruits at home and abroad, the thesis makes a profound and systematic research on the theoretical methods and application of regional ecological security evaluation.First, discusses the background of formation of regional ecological security theory and its research frame, summarizes the present research conditions, and illustrates the significance and frame of research.Second, starting with the analysis of the concept and basic characteristics of ecological security, the concept of ESA is introduced, and the basic theories of ESA are discussed. The concept of the ESA system has been studied from the point of view of the system engineering for the first time. The five components of the ESA system are:the main bodies, the targets, the objectives, the standards and the methods of ESA, which may be used as theoretic basis for studies and application of ESA in China.Third, based on the analysis of ecological situation and the consideration of society economy development in Bao'an district, the ecological security assessment indicators system is built on PSR model which has been improved, summarizes the methods of confirming evaluation unit, gathering and treating original data, and uses AHP method and entropy method to give respectively weight to the evaluation index of regional ecological security. Time series results showed that the Bao'an district ecological security integrated index tended to increase continually(2000~2005), from 0.5950 to 0.6733, while its ecological pressure become more intense. Therefore, this region is still in the state of pre-alarm according to the criterion of ecological security classification.Last, from the comprehensive results, we gave some reasonable and constructive countermeasure to the improvement of ecological security of Bao'an district. Such as positively carrying out the region city ecology construction; carrying out the ecology restoration and establishing the regional ecological security system of measure and early warning; the construction of regional ecological security pattern in Bao'an district; enhancing the ecological security knowledge among public; developing the international commutations and cooperation.
