Genetic Algorithm is a stochastic global search method that mimics the metaphor of natural biological evolution such as natural selection, heredity and mutation. Genetic Algorithm provides a universal procedure for solving all kinds of complicated problems with its good capability of global search, not restricted to the specific area of the problems.Firstly, an improved genetic algorithm based on elite selection strategy and the non-linear least squares method with Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm have been successfully integrated and felicitously designed to the synthesis of optical coatings in the dissertation. The mixed synthesis method of optical coatings features itself with good global search capability of genetic algorithm and fast local convergence capability of non-linear least squares method, which enables itself to find optimal optical coatings with great probability under the restriction of reality. The mixed synthesis method performs wonderfully especially in finding the global optimal area of optical coatings. Secondly, the mixed synthesis method is successfully applied to the design of antireflection coating, red band-pass filter, narrow band-pass filter, high reflector and other new optical coatings. Optimal multilayer systems are found with good spectral characteristics and convenient realization abilities. And the red band-pass filter has been deposited and used stably with good performance in reality.Lastly, universal software has been worked out by using the language of MATLAB for analyzing and designing optical coatings with the mixed genetic algorithm. The software has been highly appraised when tested by experts for featuring itself with concise note system, clear default system, good error-reporting system, efficient performance and friendly colorful user interface. And functionally the software can design the usual optical coatings made up of two alternate materials, and can analyze the spectral characteristics of all kinds of optical coatings, including spectral coefficients computation, sensitivity analysis and dispersion analysis, which means that the software has realized the main functions of optical coating software.
