Polyoxometalates, especially the Keggin-type polyoxometalates H3XM12O40·nH2O (X = P, Si, Ge, As; M = Mo, W), have attracted special attention because of the wide potential applications in industry. In 1972, the first example of olefin hydration for propylene to isopropanol catalyzed by tungstosilicic acid has been used in petrochemical industry in Japan. Since then, a growing interest has manifested in catalysis by polyoxometalates. Eight world-famous industrial processes of ten thousand products per year based on polyoxometalates have been done until now.In the heterogeneous as well as homogenous catalytic system, using polyoxometalates as acid-base, oxide-redox or bifunctional catalysts, there are several advantages such as high catalytic activity, high products selectivity, mild reaction conditions, no corrosion, strong Bronsted acidity, which make them extensively used as economically and environmentally catalysts in acid and oxidation systems. MCM-41 belongs to the family of mesoporous molecular sieves M41S is discovered by Beck J S in the 1990s. Due to its peculiar characteristics, large internal surface area, favorable uniformity but easily controlled size of the pore, and high thermal stability, MCM-41 has attracted considerable interest in physics, chemistry, materials science and other relevant areas.1-Octene is the raw material for industry with ample supply in China. The main application is to produce LLDPE. According to the literature method, I prepared the MCM-41 supported Keggin-type heteropoly acids. The structure of catalysts was confirmed by FT-IR, thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Here we investigated the application of 1-octene in other industrial processes using MCM-41 supported heteropoly acids in hydration and alkylation reactions. This work had two aspects as follows:1, The hydration of 1-octene catalyzed by bulk and MCM-41 supported Keggin-type heteropoly acids.2, The liquid phase alkylation of toluene with 1-octene catalyzed by bulk and MCM-41 supported Keggin-type heteropoly acids. The key factors influencing the reaction were also investigated in a detailed way, such as reaction time, temperature, mole ratio between substrate, the kinds and amount of catalysts. Emphasis is put on the optimization of catalyst performance, substrate conversion, product selectivity, and catalyst reusability.
