Ring rolling is an energy and material cost-saving, high-versatility and high-efficiency advanced manufacturing technology, with which the diameter of the ring increases and the profile is formed as the ring cross-section decreases by continuously partial plastic deformation accumulation.Feed speed control is one of the most important factors to ensure high quality of the ring during ring rolling process, and rational feed speed is the precondition of steady rolling. So it is important to control feed speed during ring rolling. Rare research about feed speed control is reported so far. A PI controller is designed to control the pressure roll movement to track a desired feed speed curve during the rolling process.A physical model of the rolling mill control system is introduced based on the work principle of rolling mill. The dynamic equations describing the ring rolling process are obtained by analyzing the physical relationship of the model. The mathematic model is also formulated when the parameters in the dynamic are determined. At the same time, a PI controller is designed to control the pressure roll movement to track a desired feed speed curve during the rolling process. Then a simulation model of the feed speed control system is founded in MATLAB/SIMULINK. Dynamic responses of the pressure roll are simulated to examine the tracking performance of the control system under two curves of the desired feed speed and the step decrease feed speed. Effects of the integral and proportional controller gains on tracking performance are discussed in detail. The values of proportion and integral controller gain are also determined when the tracking error of system reaches its minimum. The simulation results show that the control system can respond fast. The mathematic model and simulation model of D56G90 rolling mill are founded in this paper. Dynamic responses of the pressure roll are simulated to examine the tracking performance of the control system under the step decrease feed speed. An experiment is designed to prove the simulation results. The results of the experiment and the simulation are nearly the same, which shows that the control system have good tracking performance. For more convenience in investigating the effects on tracking performance of controller gains and physical parameters, a parametric table is designed using GUI methods in MATLAB, which include a user interface, a simulation model and a M file. The dynamic tracking performance of the control system can be observed real-timely by modifying the values in the interface, in no need of change the simulation model and the M file, which is convenient to the user.A program is written to optimize the controller gains of the control system using MATLAB language. An error graph is produced with varied controller gains at the end of the running of the program, which have supplied some theoretical foundation in reducing the error of feed speed during ring rolling.
