The isothermal section of the Er-Fe-Mn ternary system at 773K has been investigated mainly by X-ray powder diffraction with the aid of differential thermal analysis. The existence of seven binary compounds ErFe2, ErFe3, Er6Fe23, Er6Mn23, Er2Fe17, ErMn12, ErMn2 and one intermediate solid solution y (Fe-Mn) were conformed in this system. Er6Fe23 and Er6Mn23 form continuous solid solution Er6 (Fe-Mn)23. At 773 K, the maximum solid solubility of Fe inαMn, ErMn12, ErMn2 phases and Mn in ErFe2, Er2Fe17, aFe phases are about 31, 69, 13 at% Fe and 47, 28, 8 at% Mn, respectively. The homogeneity range of the intermediate solid solutiony (Fe-Mn) extended from about 34 at.% Mn to 52 at.% Mn. the maximum solid solubility of Er in the intermediate solid solutionγ(Fe-Mn) is about 2 at.%Er. No ternary compounds were observed at 773 K in this system. The section consists of ten single-phase regions, sixteen two-phase regions and seven three-phase regions. The ten single-phase regions are:A (Er),B (ErFe2),C (ErFe3),D(Er6e23·Er6Mn23,E (Er2Fe17),F (Fe),G(γFe),H (Mn),I (ErMn12) and J(ErMn2).The sixteen two-phase regions are : A+B,B+C,C+D,D+E,E+F,F+G,G+H,H+I,I+D,D+J,J+A,B+D,B+J,E+I,E+G and G+I.The seven three-phase regions are : A+B+J,B+C+D,B+D+J,D+E+I,E+F+G,E+G+I and G+H+I.
