High speed milling has lots of advantages, such as hyper speed cutting, high accuracy and high production rate. Active magnetic bearings (AMB) offer remarkable advantages over conventional bearings. First, magnetic suspension requires no lubrication, making it possible to achieve very high rotational speeds with much longer life for the mechanical components. Second, magnetic bearings can be used as actuators for active control of the shaft. Controller is of most importance to the ABM milling spindle. The NN-PID and Fuzzy-PID controllers are designed for the rigid AMB milling spindle and simulation results are given. The main work of this paper can be summarized as follow:First, as ABM milling spindle's dynamics model is analyzed considering cutting–disturbance and then the NN-PID control is applied to the high speed AMB milling spindles. Compared with traditional PID controller, simulation has shown that, the NN-PID controller enables much better dynamic performances over the traditional PID controller.Secondly, Fuzzy-PID controller was designed for the system, and simulation result was given. As far as the simulation is concerned, the system performances of the Fuzzy-PID controller are better than traditional-PID controllers. The research of this paper has some significance in terms of theory as well as practice.
