In the preparation process of ceramic corundum abrasives, the effects of the initial concentration of raw materials, the adding methods of the ammonia, ball milling time, different additives and their composition, addition amount and sintering temperature on the microstructure, single particle compressive strength of the abrasives were researched systematically via scanning electronic microscope (SEM) and diamond single particle compressive strength tester.The results showed that the properties of the abrasives were influenced remarkably by the initial concentration of the materials, the ball milling time, the adding methods of ammonia, additives and their composition, addition amount and sintering temperature. With the increase of the initial concentration of raw materials, the grain size of abrasives increased, but the abrasive's single particle compressive strength reduced. The excessive adding speed of the ammonia would induce the rapid growth of abrasive grains, the poor compactness of the abrasives and the decline of single particle compressive strength. Longer ball milling time didn't consequentially result in better properties of abrasives, proper ball milling time would not only improve the properties of abrasives, but increase the production efficiency. The grain size could be controlled effectively and the compactness of the abrasives would be improved greatly by choosing suitable additives. Proper additives composition would promote the sintering of alumina, restrain the growth of grains and improve the single particle compressive strength of abrasives. The grains could be fined and the single particle compressive strength of abrasives could be increased by adding appropriate amount of additives. Sintering temperature had obvious effect on the properties of the abrasives, the better properties of alumina abrasives could be obtained at appropriate sintering temperature.
