As the rapid development of welding technology and its application, non-destructive testing will surely face the challenges from welds of different shapes and different welding positions. Normally there is some application limitation to the automatic ultrasonic inspection systems provided by professional manufacturers, and these manufacturers do not provide core technology information, which make it difficult for users to maintain and update the inspection systems. A set of open automatic ultrasonic inspection system based on HSD4 ultrasonic card is developed in this paper, to meet the requirement of inspection of some special welding structure.A set of triaxial linked automatic controlling system is designed in this paper, and the corresponding hardware is built, so that the system can be controlled by computer and provided with multi-speed transmission. A set of auto-scanning software for flat welds and circumferential welds is designed, based on above system, so the scanning locomotion system for automatic ultrasonic testing is completed. Based on VC++.net, the ultrasonic type A and type C display software and the inspection data processing software is developed in this paper, which provide the system with basic ultrasonic inspection functions.Many kinds of experiments have been designed to test the reliability of the inspection result, the accuracy of the positioning of imperfection, and the inspection efficiency. The experiment result shows sufficient inspection accuracy, inspection efficiency, and working stability and reliability of the inspection system.For further test of the property, the system has been applied to inspect the surfacing welding joint of dissimilar base materials. Appropriate testing plans are applied to inspect the flat welds and circumferential welds, which are based on sound field calculation and theoretical analyses. Afterwards, the circumferential surfacing welds of dissimilar base material are destructive tested, and the testing result meets the non-destructive testing result very well about the position, configuration, and the size of the imperfect, which finally prove the reliability of the inspection result of the system.
