| Based on the revision of state standard GB1103-1999"Cotton-Upland cotton", this paper put forward the amendment of GB6098.1-1985"Test method for length of cotton fibres– Roller analyser"—fibre length grouped at the class intervals of 1mm instead of 2mm.Since length of cotton fibres influences on commercial trade, spinning process and yarn quality, it is important of measuring the length of cotton fibres accurately. Comparing the method and instrument for length of cotton fibres in domestic and abroad, the reason why not the fast testing instrument of cotton fibre length used widely in textile enterprises was analyzed, while roller test method with wide applications, various testing items is one of the recommended method in state standard. The problems exist in roller test method at present were stated in this paper.The primary work have been done as follows: it was pointed out that fibre length should be grouped at the class intervals of 1mm by Y111 roller analyser; the technical feasibility of new roller test method were studied; the length indexes were theoretical deduced; based on a large amount of experiments, the new and old test methods were contrast studied; according to production practice, the yarn quality was tested and analyzed.Conclusions are as following: when fibre length grouped at the class intervals of 1mm, more groups are gained; in theory, the calculation of length index corresponds to the definition much; in practice, the measuring results of new method are much close to the true length of cotton fibres; the product quality is improved under the guidance of the results of new method; so, the new method is of some application value in textile industry.
