Along with the computer technology, the communication and the microelectronic technology rapid development, the textile survey domain is also carrying on a huge revolution. Embedded operating system will achieve bright prospect of digitization for textile measurement. Embedded system can be defined as a special computer system that supports hardware tailoring and software tailoring to meet the special requirements of the applying system for volume, function, and cost and so on. The choice of appropriate embedded operating system can speed up the development of project and improve the performance of system. Linux has a stable and efficient kernel, and trait of open source and abundant material, so embedded system will improve the measure precision the testing speed for cotton fiber color and length measurement with no doubt.Firstly, the theory and development background of color,length measurement and the embedded operating system is described in the thesis. Secondly, the digital image measuring principle of the cotton fiber and the main measurement indexes are introduced, which shows the necessity of choosing Linux based on ARM9 to be hardware and software resource. Setting up the system's across-compile environment and explanting Linux System to the hardware platform based on ARM9, which is RISC 32 high speed processor S3C2410A made by Samsung Corporation, constructs the development base for software realization of the instrument function. Also, according to the character and main function of cotton fiber's color and length measure equipment, the functional realization theory and hardware circuits of every module of the instrument such as camera and LCD is detailedly analyzed. The improvment of the light decreases the error caused by light unstablity. The software development based on Linux embedded operation system makes the color and length measurment come true.It can be proved the dependability and feasibility of the instrument by analysis and comparion of the testing result. Lastly, some problems and key technology in testing and porting process are summarized.
