For the present, the use of aluminum alloy profile becomes more and more popular.Increasingly attention has been paid to extrusion technology, because it not only saving raw material, but also has high productiviy. Extensively investigation has been launched on optimization of process paramter of extrusion and extrusion dies.Rules for porthole die design was firstly discussed, and then steady state simulation on extrusion for rectangular-cross aluminum profile using FEM code HyperXtrude was presented in this paper. 3D finite element simulation of porthole die extrusion was successfully obtained after properly assign the following simulation strategy: balancing the simulation velocity and simulation precision problem caused by the element quantity, setting up fine element where a very detailed model is necessary and establishing a mesh that is equal on the interface between the billet and die, applying right boundary conditions. The influence of billet initial temperature, ram speed and heat transfer coefficient on porthole extrusion process which could directly provide theoretical guidelines to extrusion process design was introduced in this paper. It is shown that profile temperature get higher and extrusion load will firstly increase and then decrease with the raise of ram speed. Effect of the shape of the die on the porthole die extrusion was then obtained after numerical simulation on metal flow in two different kind of porthole die has been carried out. Lastly, experiment was carried out to validate the simulation results, and it conformed well to the simulation results both in quality and tendency.
