The artificial lift methods, which are used widely in oil field, include rod-pumping method, electrical submersible pump, hydraulic piston pump and progressive cavity pump and so on. The characteristics and applicability of the rod-pumping method and progressive cavity pump are analyzed and compared in this paper. According to the fact that the rod-pumping method can not apply to the production of the deviated well directional well high sand content well and heavy oil well, the configurations, working mechanisms, coordinated supply and production and lifting characteristics of the electrical submersible progressive cavity pump(ESPCP) are studied, which based on the analysis of the type and applicability of ESPCP. Some key techniques such as he required input of low rate of revolution and high torque, the operating axial force, the protection of downhole subassembly in high pressure and temperature, the lower life of stationary balata, lower production rate and lower lift height and so on are analyzed and some measurements were proposed in this paper. Combined with the existing techniques, the application of ESPCP was discussed, and the optimum design method of the oil production scheme of ESPCP was studied on the base of these analyses. Finally, a case was studied. The results can instruct the oil production.
