According to several explored experiments of present thickeners for reactive dye printing, 3 kinds of synthetic thickeners compound of polypropylene crylic acid and carboxymethyl cellulose was well performed and prospect was selected to command with sodium alginate. Those blended systems were: synthetic thickener Ciba 7860-sodium alginate; synthetic thickener Clariant DRA-sodium alginate; synthetic thickener Clariant DRA-sodium alginate; half emulsified synthetic thickener ZW603-sodium alginate; carboxymethyl cellulose(DS=1.3)-sodium alginate. The basic properties and end-products were tested and compared, of which rheology of mixed thickeners was most emphasized.The result shows that mixed thickeners present great diversity in properties (especially viscidity and rheology). At certain proportions the synthetic thickeners-sodium alginate systems' viscidity abnormally increased, especially the half emulsified synthetic thickener ZW603-sodium alginate system, of which the viscidity increased dramatically, therefore was great prospected and was the emphasis for further research. Carboxymethyl cellulose-sodium alginate system was cooperated in viscidity, which was also great prospected. Meanwhile, not all the mixed thickeners were suit for a substitute of alginate. Mixed thickeners with synthetic thickeners and carboxymethyl cellulose as chief components was not qualified in basic properties and end product performance; whereas mixed thickeners with sodium alginate as chief components may surpass sodium alginate in some aspects. Through the mix of different thickeners, the rheology was modified, the applied scope was enlarged, the end product properties were bettered and the cost was reduced. Also, the best thickeners can be choused according to the printing apparatus, patterns to obtain the best product.
