8-hydroxylquinoline and its derivatives have been widely utilized as electroluminescent materials from the end of last centry. This thesis consists of two parts: the first part is the synthesis and liquidcrystality properties of two novel chelating compounds containing 8-hydroxyquinoline groups; the second part concerns of the preparation and characterization of 8-hydroxyquinoline-based conjugated polymer.First, 3,4,5-Tris(n-dodecan-1-yloxy)-1-aminobenzene was prepared according to literature method. Then it reacted with 8-hydroxyquinoline-5-carbaldehyde or 8-hydroxqyinoline, to obtained two novel chelating agent with long flexible chain which containing Schiff base unit or azobenzene unit, respectively. Those two compounds can coordinated with Zn2+ ion to prepare the complexes.The chemical structure of ligands and complexes was characterized by infrared absorption spectroscopy, Ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy and NMR, The results indicated that it was just the objective compounds we expected.The experimental results showed that Schiff base had strong fluorescent emission peak at 430 nm and 570 nm when excited by Ultraviolet at 290 nm; Azobenzene-like compound also had strong fluorescent emission peak at 450 nm and 780 nm when excited by Ultraviolet at 417 nm. The complexs was also characterized by XRD, DSC, TGA and POM, The result showed that the complexs had the expected chemical construction and show liquidcrystal properties. All the results indicated that two kinds of compounds containing 8-hydroxyquinoline group were successfully prepared. These compounds can coordinate with metal ions to form stable complexes. All complexs have excellent thermal stability and the initial weight-loss temperature higher than 270℃. All complexes can dissolve in dichloromethane, Tetrahydrofuran and other common organic solvent and this solubility will facilitate the device-making procedure.Second we got 8-hydroxyquinoline-containingconjugated polymer through Ullmann reaction. The chemical structure of monomer and polymer was characterized by infrared absorption spectroscopy, Ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy and NMR The results indicated that it was just the object we desighed.The experimental results showed that conjugated polymer has strong fluorescent emission peak at 380 nm and 550 nm when excited by Ultraviolet at 371 nm. The polymer was further characterized by XRD, DSC, TGA and GPC. The result showed that the polymer has the expected chemical constructure. The polymers have excellent thermal stability under nitrogen atmosphere and the initial weight-loss temperature higher than 300℃. It may be used as photoluminescence or electroluminescent materials materials. The GPC result show that Mn =3.47×103 g/mol, Mw =3.97×103 g/mol, D=1.14.
