The integral impeller is one of the most important parts of aero-engine. The machining quality of the integral impeller plays a decisive role in engine performance. This paper studies the solid modeling and 5-axis NC machining of integral impeller. The main content is as following:Based on the analysis of the model feature of integral impeller, this paper presents the common modeling principle of the integral impeller and the process method of the variable radius chamfering.The spiral tool-path planning method of the blade is given, including the re-parameterization of the trimmed surface, the determination of step length and row distance, the judgment of surface's concavity and convexity, the calculation of cutter-contact point, and so on.The examination and processing algorithm of interference between cutting tool and blade surface is achieved. The calculation method of original cutter vectors is given. After the examination, the interferential vectors are adjusted properly. In the algorithm, the cutter vectors are homogenized via interpolating method. The high quality spiral cutter location path of integral impeller blades is obtained finally.The proposed algorithms have been integrated into the UG CAD/CAM software via UG secondary development tools. After modeling and machining practice on an integral impeller of certain aerospace corporation, the algorithms are validated and the product meets the requirement.
