With the development of the modern manufacturing, modern cutting takes the trend of high removal level, efficiency and automation increasingly, the request of tool's material are more and more rigorous, for these reasons, cermet tools are more and mre recognized. It is very important to reseach on the cutting properties of cermet tools. Based on a great deal of experiments, the paper studies cutting properties of Ti(C,N) cermet cutters entirely.First, the paper introduces cermet cutters'development and the applied situation, and explains why this material have many excellent properties from the aspect of its components, microcosmic structure and the maken technics, and depictions the theory of increase toughness. Then, cutting process and status of cermet tools are analysed in theory's aspect, and the variety of cutting force and affecting factors are studied in the cutting process of cermet tools. The paper also researches mechanism of tool wear in theory and cutting process.Only considering the change of single factor, this paper establishes the Taylor formula express the relation between tool life of Ti(C,N) cermet tool and cutting parameters through cutting experiments, and discusses cutting parameters'effect to tool life. Indifferent paramet- er, cutting force and wear mechanism of Ti(C,N) cermet tool is discussed on the basis of wear characteristic and variety of cutting force of the cutting tool during continuous cutting steel 50. The result has also compared with carbide tools.Lastly, the paper introduces the main fracture types of Ti(C,N) cermet tools during the intermittent cutting. According to the intermittent cutting experiments, the tool life under different cutting parameters are measured, and the forms of fracture and generation principle are analyzed detailedly, then several methods to improve the impact resistance of cermet tools are put forward.
