With the rapid development and progress of the metal cutting technology and its degree of the automation, the need for cutting tools is higher and higher. Based on prevenient conclusion about the rank face which is plane, the paper chooses the cemented carbide indexable inserts which with the chip-breaking groove as the study focus. The issue is analyzed from the theoretic perspectives at first, then it is demonstrated through experiment, thereby improve design to optimize its performance.In order to control the chip effectively, the paper systematically and comprehensively analyses the process of cutting deformation and the standard for measuring its level, and studies the factors that affect cutting compression radio in depth through experiment.Because tool wear has a direct bearing on efficiency, quality and cost of cutting process, the paper researches mechanism of tool wear emphatically. Based on theoretic analysis, the paper analyses some typical inserts'condition of cutting force and tool wear value in different workpiece material and cutting parameters through a great deal of experiments.In order to increase tool life, the paper analyses the factors that affect tool life systematically from workpiece material, tool material, tool geometrical parameters, cutting parameters, tool lubricating and cooling condition.Chip-breaking is the paper's another emphasis. Presently, using chip-breaking to break chip is the most common means. The paper deeply investigates chip-breaking mechanism and design theory of three dimension chip-breaking grooves. Based on this, the paper chooses some inserts which possess characteristic and machining carbon steel to experiment, and discusses that cutting parameters, chip-breaking groove geometrical parameters and workpiece material performance how to affect chip-breaking performance, and summarizes design characteristic of chip-breaking groove of indexable insert which is used to machining carbon steel.
