With the rapid development of science and technology, carbide has been widely used in metal cutting as tool material, and the performance of the cemented carbide directly influences the efficiency and quality of manufacture. People always pay more attention to the research of carbide tool groove and the tool life. Based on a great deal of experiments, the paper studies the problems of cemented carbide tool grooves and fracture mechanism.First,the paper presents the significance of chip-breaking groove studies,and summarizes the background and achievement of chip controlling and chip-breaking groove at home and abroad. Then, the paper discusses the summarization of the research on tool fracture mechanism, and introduces the main work of this paper.Then, the main factors in groove design, which influence the performance of cutting tool, are analyzed, including some aspects of cutting tool angles and geometry parameters of chip-breaking groove. The paper studies same especial design of modern chip-breaking grooves, and points out the excellences applying in chip-breaking groove design.After that, according to the cutting experiments of several cutting tools used for different cutting materials, the influence of two chip-breaking grooves on chip-breaking mechanism and cutting force is discussed, and the groove characteristics of cutting tools used in stainless steel and carbon steel summarized. Otherwise, the influence of cutting parameters on chip-breaking performance is studied, and the differences between semi finish cutting tool and finish cutting tool are compared and discussed. Also, the influence of the corner radius on chip-breaking performance is analyzed in the paper.Lastly, the paper introduces the main fracture types of carbide cutting tool during the intermittent cutting. According to the intermittent cutting experiments, the tool lives under different cutting parameters are measured, and the forms of fracture and generation principle are analyzed detailedly, then several methods which used in chip-breaking groove design to improve the impact resistance are put forward.
