Using broken grooves to break chips is a most effective method, and now it is used abroad in the automated production lines. The first problem of developing reasonable broken grooves is to understanding the broken mechanism, and have made a lot of research. Mathematic model of two-dimensional broken grooves has been brought forward, but reasonable 3-D grooves mathematic model hasn't been brought forward and the research about chip forming process , mechanism of breaking chip of 3-D grooves is not perfect.Stainless steel is plastic material, and it is not easy to break chip in finish machining. It is significant to research the 3-D grooves for stainless steel finish machining and so we can know about the broken mechanism of broken grooves, quicken the process of developing broken grooves for hard machining material, improve our self-independent developing ability.In this paper, it extends the mathematic model of 2-D grooves and uses typical parameters to establish upward chip curling radius formula. It is based on the 3-D grooves structure, analyses the chip flow direction and equivalent parameter, and establishes the 3-D grooves mathematic model for protruded and concaved complicated surface. It can be used to predict the broken effect or to guide the broken grooves designing.It is based on the mathematic model, and it has been established the 3-D grooves designing method and developing process for finish cutting stainless steel. We use the electrical discharge machining technology to machine the groove in the insert and make cutting experimentation, observe the broken condition and find the scope of the broken chip. We also measure the parameters of the chip and compare with the mathematic model. The consequence of experiment is consistent with the expected aim, so we can conclude the 3-D groove mathematic modelis right.This paper uses the software DEFORM-3D to simulate the cutting process, and finds the relation between the groove parameter, cutting parameter and chip form , cut ting force, stress strain , temperature. The simulating consequence is consistent with cutting experiment and theory analysis result, and so we can use the FEA to understand the broken mechanism, use FEA to replace the experiment to decrease the cost of developi ng.In the end, this paper concludes the research, and expects about the researching of groove mathematic model and the FEA of the cutting process.
