In order to improve the continuous casting (CC) efficiency and satisfy the requirement of high qualitative products, in recent years, the metallurgists have taken a serious action on strengthening and enlarging the metallurgical function of a tundish. One of the important measures was that the appropriate flow control devices were installed to form the reasonable flow pattern, which not only made the inclusions floatation but also created the advantageous condition to uniform the liquid steel temperature and composition.The four- strand round bloom caster tundish at Chengdu Iron and Steel, Pan Steel Group was the objects for investigation in the dissertation. The best flow control device in the tundish had been chosen used by the numerical and physical simulation. The experiment model was made of Plexiglas, which was 1/3 of the prototype. The experiments had been carried into execution based on the Froude similarity by similarity principle. The numerical model that describing the flow phenomena in the tundish was established according to the continuity equation, momentum equation and energy equation, meanwhile the FLUENT commercial software was used to calculate.Some conclusions could be drawn according to the study on the tundish. When no flow control devices were equipped, obvious short-circuited flow and large dead region existed in the tundish, the flow and temperature field were not uniform and the inclusions were difficult to be removed. When case 11 had been used, the average residence time of molten steel could be prolong marvelously, the dead region decreased , the piston flow region increased, the inclusions were easy to be removed and the flow and temperature filed were more uniformly distributed. Consequently, case 11 was recommended for industry producing at Chengdu Iron and Steel, Pan Steel Group.When used the recommended flow control device in trial, the baffle and dams hadn't been destroyed on the whole and the shape of holes remained intact after casting. The temperature discrepancy of different flow was below 5℃in the tundish, and the temperature distribution was uniform. The inclusion content that the size was larger than 100μm in the casting bloom was not found, and the average steady non-metal inclusion content decreased 41.1%, and the total oxygen content had decreased 30.7% in the tundish. The A,B,C,D rating results of the non-metal inclusion of the tubing were in the range of 1.0 level. The flow control device had an better effect on metallurgical functions in the tundish.
