In continuous casting, tundish as the transition container between ladle and mold,not only has the function of storing and distributing molten steel, but also being theimportant link of secondary refining process, especially for purifying the molten steel.For which the tundish metallurgy has received more attention. The flow behavior ofliquid steel is affected by many factors, especially the structure of tundish. Areasonable tundish structure should try to keep the components and temperature of themolten steel in the tundish uniform, residence time as consistent as possible and beconducive to the removal of inclusions.This thesis will make research on an eight-strand tundish in a steel plant, using themethod of numerical simulation and physical simulation to study on the flow field andthe residence time distribution in the tundish and put forward the optimized structure ofthe flow control devices.Firstly, according to the numerical simulation find the better flow control device toguide the water modeling. And use the water modeling results to verify the results ofnumerical simulation. Then use molten steel as the medium to optimize the flow controldevices put forward ahead, and simulate the temperature field in the tundish. The resultsshow that:(1) The flow field of the original tundish without flow control devices isunreasonable, the short circuit flows in No.1and No.2strand are obvious, thedifferences of residence time among the strands are great and the volume fraction of thedead zone is as large as50.4%.(2) The water modeling results and the results of numerical simulation show that,the problems of the original tundish are solved by placing reasonable flow controldevices in the tundish.(3) Use the molten steel as the medium to optimize the flow control devices putforward ahead, the optimized flow control devices future improve the flowcharacteristics of the flow in the tundish. The molten steel get thoroughly mixed in thetundish, the residence times of each strand are similar and the differences of temperaturein each outlet are less than1℃, the volume fraction of the dead zone reduces vastlyfrom50.4%to15.1%, which helps improve the quality of the slab.
