With the development of the pharmaceutical industry in our country, much attention has been paid to the pollution of the wastewater treatment and the relevant solutions. Pharmaceutical wasterwater is characterized with great changes in quantity and quality, complicated composition and high level in organic pollutants many of which are hard to be degraded by micoorganism, adding to the high colority and low pH value. It is a kind of industy wastewater which is difficult to treat.Based on the technique of bio-rotating contactor, anaerobic baffled reactor(ABR) has been developed as a high effective anaerobic wastewater treatment recently, it has the ability to separate acidogenesis and methanogenesis. Compared with other traditional anaerobic processes, ABR has its unique characters, which include less microbial losses and better sludge sediment, better resilience to hydraulic and organic shock loadings, longer biomass retention time, reduced clogging, simple construction and easy operation. This paper provided a primary study on the ABR's startup characters when it is used in the Cephalosporin pharmaceutical wastewater treatment. Because the Cephalosporin pharmaceutical wastewater is a high concentration of organic wastewater refractory, a deep aeration and contact oxidation process has been deserted because of its loss sludge. This paper mainly talked about the effect of the ABR dealing with the pharmaceutical wastewater. The experiment results indicated that: at the conditions of about 25℃, 4 days hydraulic retention time and 3.86 kgCOD/(m3·d) volumetric organic loading rate, the removal ratio of colority and CODcr kept about 70%, while the concentration of NH3-N rised for the organic nitrogen changed to ammonia. In addition, pre-treatment process was studied in the paper. The results of the chemical treatments were however unappreciable. The CODcr removal efficiency was only about 30% and was hard to improve. So compared with the chemical treatment, the biological treatment process is a more effective and feasible way to be applied in the practice of pharmaceutical wastewater treatment. However, the chemical treatment can be considered as pre-treatment technology.
