As a new way to solve problems in product development, reverse engineering gets more and more attentions in modern manufacturing. The key NC machining techniques of the complex surface in reverse engineering are studied theoretically and practiced in this paper, which including the acquisition of point-clouds data, the reconstruction of complex surface, the NC machining tool-path programming etc.Based on the theory of reverse engineering and three-CMM, gathers many data from the complex surface of the sample part and gains points cloud, takes advantages of the combinations of Imageware and UG NX to complete the reconstructed works for complex surface model.This paper made a more comprehensive study on strategy and method of tool-path generation, the feeding pattern of complex surface. In order to improve the precision of NC machining in complex surface, the error of multi-coordinate NC machining is analyzed, then a more reasonable method is proposed to control the error. Aiming at high machine efficiency, the mathematical model of time is founded on the base of accelerate or decelerate of changing line and smooth speed in the course of machining. Using the VC++ software to write programmes for mathematical model, read the source file of cutter position from commercial CAD/CAM software and calculate the machining time of tool-path. Ultimately, the auto-optimization of orientation is achieved.Aiming at NC machining of complex surface, the paper founds tool-path programming system, making complex surface be regular and auto-optimizes tool-path according to the characteristics of shape and technics. Tool-path programming system will make up for the disadvantage of the commercial CAD/CAM software excessively depending upon the experience of engineer. This work attempts to make CAD/CAM software homemade.This study will enrich the theory of reverse technology and NC machining of complex surface and promote its application in a certain extent.
