Taken the Yubujie Coal Mine for example, the paper does not only studys the size of the room and pillar under the special structual overlying strata, but also amend the conventional formula calculating the size of room and pillar. Based on the research on the characteristic of aeolian sand, widely distributed in the north of Shanxi Province, the paper proposes an idea that stows with aeolian sand into the gobs at the same time of mining by the room and pillar method. Rather than the pillar method, the backstowing with room and pillar technique would mine out more coal and would control the strata better. After the range of stowing ration and the sizes of the pillar and room are discussed by mathematic and mechanical calculation, several programs are given and simulated by 3DEC. The paper also discusses partial backstowing's effect on strata control. The initial study may provide a theoretical way to confirm the parameters of stowing with room and pillar method, and has practical help on mining by room and pillar method in Yuyang district.
