In this paper, eight novel coordination complexes containing flexible bis(benzimidazole) ligands which have never been reported previously were synthesized. This article represents a systematical examination of their structures. In order to survey the influence of the neutral ligands, anions, and metal ions on the formation of the final structures, two flexible ligands, 1,1'-(1,4-butanediyl) bis (2-methylbenzimidazole)(L1), 1,1'-(1,4-butanediyl) bis(2-ethylbenz-imidazole)(L2) and seven kinds of acid, p-methoxy-benzoic acid(Hpmb), cinnamic acid(Hcin), benzoic acid(Hben), m-aminobenzoic acid(Hmab), o-aminobenzoic acid(Hoab) , oxalic acid(H2OX), fumaric acid(H2fum) are selected for study, and eight novel compounds have been synthesized: [Ag(ben)(L1)]·H2O·C2H5OH(1), [Ag(oab)(L1)](2),[Ag2(ox)(L1)2]·G2H5OH(3),[Ag(pmb)(L1)]·C2H5OH(4), [Ag(pmb)(L2)]·C2H5OH(5),[Ag(cin)(L2)]·C2H5OH(6), [Ag2(mab)2(L2)]·H2O(7), [Ag2(fum)(L2)]·(H2O)4(8)。The crystal structures have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compounds 4,5 and 6 are 1D structures. The 1D chains in 1 and 2 form 2D supramolecular structures through the intermolecular n-n stacking. Compound 3 displays 2D layer structure formed by the connecting of the ligands in it. 7 and 8 are both 3D supramolecular structures through the interaction ofπ-πstacking between the 2D layers, however, the layers of 7 are formed by the linking of the organic ligands to the 1D chains, but in 8 the chains interlace with each other by hydrogen bonds to generate 2D layer structures.
