Application Of Chinese Traditional Auspicious Pattern On Clothing Design

The Chinese habilatory history can be traced back to 5000 years ago, from when on pattern has been of great significance in the art of fashion design. The traditional auspicious patterns have conveyed their unique ethical meaning and ornamental style in fashion design, which has inherited the spirit of traditional culture on one hand, and kept many traits of folk craft on the other. Although there are more and more colorful patterns and advanced tailoring methods appeared in fashion design along with the development of technology, the fashion design works, which combine the strength of traditional patterns with the design of modern clothing and match modern design rationale, are really rare. Therefore, the exploring of fashion design with Chinese traditional pattern style has become a research field of remarkable importance. On the basis of studying the features of auspicious patterns in traditional clothing, the historical evolution of patterns applied in fashion design and the development of auspicious patterns in clothing with the evolution of fashion design, the application of Chinese auspicious patterns in traditional Chinese clothing design had been analyzed from the perspectives of traditional mode of thinking, religious belief, symbolic meaning of auspiciousness and craft development in this paper. Through the analysis of the dilemma of Chinese traditional auspicious patterns confronted in 20th Century and the present status of traditional auspicious patterns applied in both Chinese and foreign fashion design, the author intends to explore new combinations instead of being restricted by old conception, to construct a new system of traditional auspicious patterns and modern fashion design, to open up new phase for traditional auspicious patterns and modern fashion design craft, to push the diversified development of traditional auspicious patterns in the design and bring new life to traditional craft of applying auspicious patterns in modern fashion design. Hopefully, this paper can help in applying the strength of traditional patterns in the design of modern clothing so as to develop a new modern fashion designing style with Chinese traditional artistic features.
