There are massive cattail plant resources in china.However,this valuable natural resource is not fully used.Beacause most people lack full understanding of cattail fiber's properties and have not realized the potential application of it.In order to expand people's knowledge about cattial fiber and faciliate the reasonable use of this natural fiber,this study investigate the properties of cattail fiber from below aspect:shape structure,physical properties,chemical properties and buoyancy performance.Based on massive literature review,this paper has mainly maked detailed research from four aspects of the cattail fiber performance such as shape structure,etc.The main conclusions are as follows:(1)Cattail fiber shape structure assemblyCattail fiber,obtained from the cattail stick,exist in the form of lobate shape.this fiber contains three parts:cattail seed,single fiber and trunk.The cattail seed is elliptoid,with taper both sides,located at the peak of cattail fiber.The longitudinal surface of cattail fiber is rough, with uneven diameter and bamboo nodular node on each single fiber. Fiber mesocoele is seperated by some"partition board"forming some small mesocoeles.There are less than 3 bunch on the trunk.The single fiber grows intentinonally surrounding the bunch.With the same as kapok fiber,the single fiber has high hollouness,as well as the shape structure and down have certain similarity.(2)Cattail fiber physical propertyThe fiber length between both ends and central section of the cattail stick have great difference.The both sides fiber is short and its dispersion is big,while the middle part fiber length is quite centralized.The fiber length distributes in 2.25~10.65mm scope and concentrates in 6.25~9.85 mm.Entire curve is approximate normal distribution.The fiber distribution in the end of cattail stick is more centralized and thinner than the middle part.The fiber fineness in middle part is more scatter and thick.The fiber fineness mainly distributes in 10~12.5μm and 12.5~15μm two sectors,and 10~12.5 urn sector accounts for 52%.The moisture regain of cattail stick is 4.78%,while the moisture regain of cattail fiber is 7.57%.There are 30~80 stalk fiber in one fragrant cattail flower.The fiber quantity in one flower distribute randomly in certain range.The mass specific resistance of cattail fiber is very small,much more smaller than all the other common textile fibers. So it is not easy to accumulate static.Its strength is very small,possibly about 0.1cN.(3)Cattail fiber chemical propertiesThrough the comparison of infra-red absorption spectrum chart between cattail and the kapok fiber,the cattail wool fiber and the kapok fiber show similar structure.The acid proof density of cattail fiber is higher than its alkali resistance density.When the sample color and shape change remarkably under same condition,the density of H2SO4 is 65%, while the density of NaOH is 20%.The PH value of cattail fiber is 6.7, meeting the requirement of GB18401 PH value standard which requests to each kind of textile,with harmless to the human body.The absorbance of fragrant cattail wool fiber is 1.381 and its pectin content of is 1.013% which determined by fabric pectin content measuration. (4)Cattail fiber buoyancy performanceCattail fiber assembly can provide buoyancy which is 5 times heavier than itself.With the fiber assembly's immersion time increases,the buoyancy declines.The buoyancy multiple decreases progressively in turn during 72 hour.The buoyancy multiple is 5.14 at 5 minute,4.88 at 1 hour,and the buoyancy drops is 4.90%.The buoyancy multiple is 4.42 at 24 hour and the buoyancy drops is 14%.The buoyancy multiple is 3.92 at 72 hour and the buoyancy drops is 23.70%.The textile fiber assembly can provide buoyancy performance is related to fiber material,while the buoyancy drop degree is involve with the fiber assembly's bulk density.
