In this paper oil crust was simulated by paraffin and 60Co-γray is irradiated vertically, we have accepted scattering photons at the definite scattering angle and found there is good linear relation between scattering photon numbers and paraffin thickness, there is a high sensitivity. Verifying there is few difference of sensitivity when the scattering angle is 115°~135°. On the base of this experiment, verifying real oil crust, we got the same conclusion; the Compton scattering sensitivity of 1.25 Mevγ-ray of 60Co in the simple of paraffin was measured byγ-ray energy spectrum analyzer in two determining means. At the same experimental condition, we have used this scattering sensitivity to determine paraffin thickness. The result shows the average relative error is about 1.29﹪for the best group; To improve the measuring method of the grease stain thickness in oil pipeline, petroleum simulated by paraffin and oil crust thickness was detected. Experiment result indicates when paraffin thickness is less than one third of inside diameter of pipeline, with oil crust thickness is changing scattering photo number is changing obviously, there is a high sensitivity and the difference is little. When paraffin thickness is more than one half of inside diameter of pipeline, the sensitivity is rapidly decreasing and oil crust thickness isn't detected; The experiment result discussed above indicates determining grease thickness in petroleum pipelines byγ-ray scattering method is feasible.
