Micro electrical discharge machine is a kind of important equipment of precise mould manufacturing, which has significant station in mould industry. Modern mould manufacturing requires micro electrical discharge machines to have higher machining precision. The dynamic characteristics of machine tools and components affect the machining precision directly. Therefore, to improve the dynamic characteristics of components has great significance to improve the performance of electrical discharge machine.In this paper, the design feature of the structure of electrical discharge machine and components has been introduced and the modeling and virtual fabrication of electrical discharge machine has been completed. The structure has been optimized based on finite element analysis. Finally, the modal analysis of optimal components has been conducted and it turned out that the optimization structure is feasible. The contents of this paper are as follows:1,The function of electrical discharge machine mechanical system has been analyzed and the designing and modeling of electrical discharge machine and components has been achieved.2,The virtual prototype has been set up, and the analysis of the kinematics and dynamics has been done. The law of motion, the velocity and the displacement has been checked. Moreover, the motion inertia force could be achieved via the acceleration curve.3,The fluid-solid interaction model of tool electrode and working liquid has been built. The FSI force has been calculated by using finite element method, and the affection of shape of tool electrodes has been analyzed.4,The modal analysis and dynamic characteristics analysis of electrical discharge machine has been achieved, the modal analysis of gantry and foundation has been accomplished. The weakness of the structure could be known from the results and then the structure has been optimized based on the modification of some parameters like the size of components and the amount of strengthening rib, as a result the dynamic characteristics of gantry and foundation has been enhanced.
