Analogy method is predominantly adopted in the traditional Progressive Cavity Pump (PCP) design which is mainly concerned about safe and stabilization with less consideration in optimization which brings problems in two aspects: one, higher technology indices of the PCP system resulting in higher investment cost; two, lower PCP system efficiency leading to higher energy consumption and operation cost increase. This not only can't meet the need of energy saving and production cost reduction of oil fields but also can't develop PCPs'technology advantages. With PCPs'application increasingly extended in oil fields, the influence of a PCP system's optimization level on the production effect is getting increasingly heavy. The design of a PCP system is mainly involved in system analysis and equipments selection (i.e. the selection of a PCP, sucker rods, tubing and a drive head) which is involved in basic equipment parameters and performances including pumps, sucker rods, tubings, casings, motors and speed reductions as well as equipments manufacturers. Of them, the optimizing selection of a pump is the key part in the design of the whole system. This paper sets up hydraulic performance templets and a hydraulic performance data-base of various PCPs via laboratory simulation experiments and puts forward a design principle of pump selection and pump speed optimization. It improves and integrates existing PCP analysis models and sets up a data-base of equipment models, configurations and performances from surface to downhole to set up equipment selection procedure and perform pump speed optimization. In the end, this paper brings forward a scientific, comprehensive and normative method for a PCP system design which fully integrates and optimizes PCPs'equipments and assorted technologies to provide scientific references for a PCP design, normalize and simplify a PCP design procedure. This method will be quite significant to reduce PCPs'design and operation cost, prolong their lifetimes and enhance their efficiencies.
