EDM, as a process different from traditional machining, has been widely used in manufacturing mould and automobile industry. Meanwhile, it has played an irreplaceable role. For a long time, EDM Milling is looked on as supplementary means of the traditional forming EDM because of discharge gap and the tool electrode wear compensation. With the emerging of the complex component and difficult processing materials, people hope that can use simple electrodes (for example, rod-electrodes) as the same milling cutter for the conventional forming EDM. There is advantage obviously that EDM Milling compared to the traditional forming EDM. It not only save a lot of forming electrodes, and shorten the production cycle, and reduce processing costs, and increase the flexibility of processing, etc. There is a series of important significance. With the low-cost and flexible processing of EDM Milling, the traditional forming EDM which are second to none.A new train of thought is provided by EDM Milling. The one of its key technology is the detect and compensation of the tool electrodes wear.Many scholars had done a lot of research in the field of tool wear compensation. They paid attention on processing technology to reduce wastage. Or design complicated detection and measurement system, and detect wastage and then feedback compensate. This article is written on the basic of theoretical modeling, and a new method of fix-length compensation has been adopted. Based on the machining accuracy, we decide whether write compensation or not. The paper also studied the compensation arithmetic that the tool electrode maching track is a straight line or an arc when machine single groove in monolayer, and carried out the compensation arithmetic when machine complex track in theory. The theory model is authenticated by experiments.The relations between electrode wear and its main factors (peak current, pulse duration, pulse interval and machining time) are researched by orthogonal experiments that use copper as electrode material and mold steel as workpiece material. The correctness of the theoretic is validated by experiment.
