In this thesis, a series of polymers such as PMMA and PS dispersed organic photochormic compounds such as 1′,3′,3′-Trimethylspiro-8-nitro (2H-1- benzopyran- 2′,2′-indoline) (SP) and 1,3-diphenyl-4-(3'–chloro)benzal-pyrazol-5-one N(4)-ethyl- thiosemicarbazone (DP3ClBP-MTSC) thin films were fabricated. Their thermal, mechanical and photochromic properties were discussed. The result showed that the coloring and decoloring rates of SP-PMMA and SP-PMMA-DOP films are faster than those SP-SP and SP-PS-DOP films. DOP acts as plasticizer to increase the coloring and decoloring rates of the films. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of polymer dispersed spiropyran thin film is lower than that of the related polymer matrix, and the addition of DOP further decreases the Tg of the film. The tensile strength and the elongation at break of SP-PMMA and SP-PMMA-DOP films are higher than those SP-SP and SP-PS-DOP films. The coloring rates of [DP3ClBP-MTSC]-PMMA and [DP3ClBP-MTSC]-PMMA-DOP films decrease about 60~80 times than those of DP3ClBP-MTSC in the solid state, and the decoloring rates decrease about 8~10 times . The addition of DOP can increase the coloring and decoloring rates. Tg of [DP3ClBP-MTSC]-PMMA film containing 10%[DP3ClBP-MTSC] is higher than that of PMMA, but Tg of [DP3ClBP-MTSC]-PMMA film containing 30%[DP3ClBP-MTSC] is lower than that of PMMA.
