With the development of the scientific technology, liquid crystal is attracting more people's attention. The chemists show an interest in derivatives of ferrocene for its remarkable thermal stability and mesomorphic characteristic .The liquid crystal of the ferrocenyl benzoate, p- ferrocenyl benzoic acid is synthesised by the reaction of ferrocene with p- amino benzoic through the method of phase transfer catalysis. Then, straight-chain alkyl esters and phenol esters of ferrocenyl benzoic are synthesised by two different esterification methods. The deposited compounds are eight ferrocenyl ester derivatives (Fc-C6H5-COOR) and all of them have been characterized by element analysis, IR and 1HNMR spectroscopies.The phase transition of liquid crystal is studied by polarizing optical microscope (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC).It is found that the ester of 4-ferrocenyl benzoate,4'-Octyloxycarbonyl- 4-ferrocenylbenzoate and 4'-tetradecyl 4-ferrocenylbenzoate are smectic thermotropic liquid crystal, because its length-diameter ratio is over four referring to the influnence of conjugated system and length-diameter ratio on liquid crystal.
