This article mainly analysed the stability of 82 coal seam roof, the sedimentary petrology, structural geology, rock mechanics and fractal theory were used to do this work.The main factors that affect the coal seam's roof stability such as sedimentary characteristics, rock structure characteristics were studyed.According to the Xutuan Coal Mine's drilling data, geophysical data, the study area's fracture complexity were studied; the rocks'physical and mechanical properties were tested indoor.Firstly, the factors that affect the roof's stability were determined, the AHP method was use to determine the weight of the factors; secondly, the study area was divided into several units, the membership of each unit to each evaluation grade under each factor was determined.Finally, the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation and the maximum membership degree law were used to determine the stability level of each unit.A three-dimensional finite-difference geological model of 8223\7223\7123 work face was seted up, the mining effects of the work faces were simulated, and the changes of stress and displacement in the rock were accurately reflected. The destruction characteristic of overburden rock in the work face was analyzed.Compared with actual measurement results; the simulation results are accurate.So it can provides a scientific basis for roof management.
