Good environment is an essential precondition for regional economic development and social stabilization. Ecological environment provides human with various resources, at the same time, it sustains fantastic destruction of our human beings. At present, ecological environment problems have existed around the world. Since the economic reformation in China, China's economy has developed rapidly; however, its ecological price has been very conspicuous. Therefore, according to the features of various research regions, choosing evaluation indexes, setting up ecological environment evaluation models, evaluating the ecological environment, investigating the condition of the ecological environment and proposing protection and management measures of ecological environment have become the current objective requirements. This paper takes the Tai'an City of Shandong province as research region, uses remote sensing and GIS technology and its related theory, extracts the indexes of biological abundance, vegetation cover, water density and land degradation which reflect the condition of ecological environment through the remote sensing images, establishes ecological environment quality evaluating model based on GIS, evaluates the ecological environment condition of Tai'an City and then divides the quality of ecological environment of Tai'an City into five regions. Analyzing the various types of regions, this paper provides the existing problems of the ecological environment of Tai'an City and also provides measures and solving approaches.The main conclusions from this paper are as follows:(1)This paper evaluates the whole ecological environment condition and analyses the spatial configuration of the Tai'an City. Results show that: the whole condition of ecological environment of Tai'an City is general, the whole city's northern and eastern small part mountain area's ecological environment quality is good, other mountain area's ecological environment quality is poor and it accounts for relatively large areas. So regulation and adjustment measures are needed. The environment quality of city and residential points is relatively poor. The environment quality of farm crop planting areas is general. Through posterior cultivation, the protection of ecological environment quality should be paid attention to.(2) This research shows that extracting indexes which reflect ecological environment quality from remote sensing images and establishing ecological environment quality evaluating model based on GIS and other auxiliary information is a fast and efficient method which evaluates the ecological environment. Also, it can provide government department with technical supports for making decisions.(3) Compared with traditional statistical investigation method, extracting indexes which reflect ecological environment by RS has advantages of rapid, prompt and renewal speed. It provides timely data for mastering ecological environment quality information and it makes monitoring ecological environment dynamically possible.(4) According to the main problems existing in the Tai'an City's ecological environment, corresponding effective measures should be taken timely to prevent the ecological environment's continue deterioration. Realizing the economic development should also protecting ecological environment, realizing the sustainable development of the area.
