Nylon-66 fabric have been widely used in military and civilian clothing, however, the melting drip from burning nylon-66 fabric is still a problem need to be solved. An intumescent flame retardant system containing ammonium polyphosphate, melamine and pentaerythritol has been proved to be effective on preventing melting drip during burning of nylon-66 fabric. The LOI and the vertical flammability tests indicate that this IFR system can impart dripping resistance to nylon-66 fabric and LOI can reach up to 27.9. Thermal behaviour of nylon-66 fabric treated with IFR system was investigated by Thermogravimetic (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) experiments. The results indicate that residual char of treated samples are normally over 13 %, with the highest value of 24 % at 750℃which is much higher than that of the untreated fabric. SEM graphs of residue of treated and untreated nylon-66 fabric show that IFR could promote formation of residual char which could improve the anti-dripping property to nylon-66 fabric. The physical property tests show that the tensile strength decreases 11 % and the elongation at break increases 15 % after treatment.Efforts were also made on back-coating with acrylic acid and waterborne polyurethane in order to improve the flame retardancy of nylon-6,6 fabric. LOI and vertical flammability tests were carried out to investigate the combustion performance. The LOI reaches to 30.5 and char length is 3.0 cm of the nylon-6,6 fabric sample back-coated with acrylic acid. The optimal result of waterborne polyurethane back coating with amino silane as the coupling agent was obtained at 2min of curing time, two layers back-coating, 1 -2 g/cm~2 of coat density.
