Mold is a core part of the continuous casting process. The appropriate taper not only can improve the cooling effect of mold, reduce the occurrence of steel-leakage accident, but also help to prevent and reduce the vertical slab cracks. In the past, design of the mold taper relies solely on the contractive law of slab. While the ideal mold must also take into account the thermal expansion, that is mold should be able to fully adapt the solidified shell shrinkage, the solidified shell is in close contact with the mold and there is no interference problem. So the mould taper design must also consider the copper's thermal expansion.In this paper, the mold taper of a domestic steel mill is optimized based on the actual production of situation. Firstly, this paper established a mathematical model of heat transfer in slab continuous casting process. The various parameters and boundary conditions of the model are made the initial choice and assumption .Based on finite element theory, I get the law of slab shrinkage and temperature changes by the analysis of heat transfer in slab continuous casting process and as a basis data for the design of mould's taper.By calculating the two-dimensional mold thermal coupling model to calculate the temperature and stress distribution of the mold in hot state. Finally, I obtain the displacement variation at the copper hot surface center.According to the contractive law of the slab and it's economic and practical, I propose the new mold taper, consider the deformation of the copper and further optimize its taper.Study shows that the change cause by casting slab shrink is larger than copper heat expansion,So the change cause by casting slab shrink is the most important factor. But the change cause by copper heat expansion is significant also. According to the rule of the change above motions, designed a new there tapper mold. It is more helpful to improve casting slab quality.
